UNI alumnus Michael Armbrecht ‘90 gave back to the University of Northern Iowa before he ever left. He made his first gift as a senior at UNI, supporting the UNI Senior Challenge.
Armbrecht has not missed a year since, giving to the Accounting Alumni Annual Campaign, College of Business Administration Dean’s Fund for Excellence, UNI Annual Fund, Alumni Association Scholarship, McLeod Center and the Darrell Davis Accounting Scholarship.

To recognize his philanthropy, the UNI Foundation recently awarded Michael with the Emerging Philanthropist Award. This award recognizes an individual or a couple, no older than 50 years of age, who have provided philanthropic support and creative leadership to the university.
“Michael Armbrecht is setting an amazing example about what it means to be an engaged alum that really cares about the future of his alma mater,” said Dr. Jessica Moon, the director of the University Honors Program. “He’s taking real action to preserve and improve the college experiences of the students that come after him.”
His engagement started as a student, as he was one of the first Presidential Scholars and received the Lux Medallion award for university service and scholarship.
The Clemons, Iowa, native now has his own scholarship that supports students similar to him, creating the Michael R. Armbrecht Endowed Honors Scholar Scholarship in 2013 to support honors students within the UNI College of Business Administration.
“While it is easy to focus on the student who benefits from Michael’s scholarship, the faculty and staff here are also very grateful that these scholarship dollars keep talented students at UNI,” said Moon. “The students benefit, yes, but the campus as a whole is improved by the contributions made by the high achieving students that Michael has elected to support.”
Armbrecht has also volunteered at UNI since graduation. He was a member of the Imagine the Impact Campaign steering committee and the Alumni Association Board of Directors from 1996-2001.
“As someone who cares about the quality of the education experience at UNI, I am grateful to have donors like Michael that really care about supporting and maintaining our tradition of excellence,” Moon said. “I would like to think that Michael is part of a chain reaction that will continue as the students he supports consider how they can pay it forward and invest in the lives of future UNI students.”
Armbrecht currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer of Honeywell’s Defense Aftermarket Americas Division
