College life can be a balancing act for many students. UNI senior Devon Ryan was able to strike the perfect balance and enjoy her college experience thanks to scholarship support.
“Earning a scholarship has opened up so many opportunities for me,” said Ryan, who attended Indian Hills Community College prior to attending UNI. “I got the email for it and was in shock. By receiving a scholarship, I was actually able to maintain a balance living off just one job. I’ve meet so many incredible people and so many incredible experiences from it.”
Scholarship support enabled Ryan to be an active member in the Alpha Xi Delta sorority where she has served as the chaplain, social chair and intramurals chair. In addition, she has volunteered at Country View Care Facility and Humane Society.
As a Family Services major, Ryan believes her volunteer experience will help her decide on a future career path.
Ryan said, “I’m hoping I can get a better sense of direction on which way I want to go through my volunteer work. Being able to work with an elderly population or disabled population gives me some great basic experience. I feel like it’s a really great place to start. “
“I like the idea that I can go out and help families or individuals that have been through things,” added Ryan. “I’ve had some experiences that will allow me to be able to relate to these, and I feel like I could really make a difference.”
Ryan, a Birmingham, Iowa, native, will graduate in Fall 2015. She will become the first member of her family to earn a four-year degree, setting an example for her younger brother and sister. Ryan also has a twin sister who received her LPN from Indian Hills Community College.
“To receive a bachelor’s degree my parents are going to be so proud,” said Ryan. “It’s awesome to be setting that example for my siblings. I think it’s important for them to see my sister and I sticking to our goals and accomplishing them. Hopefully that will set an incredible example for them.”
“Scholarships make everything so much easier, and I honestly don’t know where I would be without having received scholarships,” Ryan said. “It makes a huge impact on the individual students. It’s incredible.”
