Sarah Schreitmueller’s passion for travel and language led her to enlist in the United States Air Force as a linguist after earning her degree in French and German from UNI in December 2011.
“My career in the Air Force was something that I had not expected,” said Sarah. “I knew I wanted to work with languages, and that I was craving to travel and experience new things. It has been a great decision for me.”
Sarah, who has completed three years of a six-year Air Force commitment, has spent part of the past three years in Texas and Georgia. Her next move will take her overseas, as she will be stationed on a base in Germany beginning in November.
“I am extremely excited,” Sarah said. “I have enjoyed living in new places during my enlistment and I am excited to use French and German yet again!”
Sarah is not unfamiliar with living in a foreign country thanks to her experience at UNI. She studied abroad for an entire year, spending a semester in Besancon, France and a semester in Klagenfurt, Austria. She felt UNI professors prepared her more than the other students who were studying abroad, as she placed higher than any other American.
In addition to studying abroad, Sarah was also a resident assistant and played in the marching band during her time at UNI. Her college experience was made possible through scholarship support given by generous alumni and friends.
“I wouldn't have been able to grow as a person and have the life-changing experiences that shaped me and cultivated my love for language, the world and for travel,” Sarah said. “I wouldn't have been brave enough to join the Air Force and go to Germany. I don't know what I would have done without the scholarship.”
The support Sarah received prompted her to pay it forward, as she recognizes the impact her scholarships have made. To do this, she recently made a contribution to the university.
“I asked that my donations be for the students in the College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences,” said Sarah. “I know that for me, studying French and German was a difficult decision, but ultimately the right one. I hope my donation will help a student trying to decide what to study choose something they love, and help them find their own niche.”
