The UNI Dance Team has won two national championships in five years -- a feat that is hard to do for any program or team. Those results are even more impressive when it is accomplished by a self-funded student organization.
The team is required to fundraise just to have the opportunity to compete at the Universal Dance Association College Dance Team National Championship, hosted in Orlando, Fla. The team turned to the UNI Foundation’s crowdfunding platform, PAWprint, to raise the necessary funds to attend the 2015 competition.

The platform, combined with a detailed marketing plan, allowed the team to raise over $3,000 in just 30 days.
“We contacted friends, family members and UNI Spirit Squad Alumni,” said dance coach Megan Wolcott. “The dancers were each responsible for contacting a specific amount of people each week. We engaged people through personal emails, Facebook and Twitter. “
The dance team’s main avenue for fundraising is making appearances throughout the community. An option that would have taken 200 hours’ worth of community events to raise $3,000.
“Crowdfunding was successful for us,” Wolcott added. “It was a team effort that engaged all members of the dance team. We were surprised with how many people we could reach throughout this process, as we were able to reach out to alumni and others that we would not have had contact with previously.”
The funds were used well, as the team was a finalist in Division I Pom. The squad placed seventh in the category. The success would not have been possible without the private support that was displayed through PAWprint.
“We were thankful for the generous donations,” said Wolcott. “The support given was greatly appreciated, and each donation made a difference! Attending nationals is a great way for the dance team to represent UNI on a national level.”
